Valentina Sampaio is a Brazilian model, who I first had the delight of seeing her on a L’Oréal shoot I saw on IG. She was beautiful and glowing and I loved her. Today, I came across her gracing the cover for Vogue Paris’ March issue, and found out that it’s a big deal because she’s transgender.
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Valentina has become the very first transgender to be on the cover of French Vogue! I never even knew that Sampaio was transgender, and it makes no difference to me, she’s still beautiful and talented, but it does make my heart leap for joy at seeing strong transgender women being recognized and given the same opportunity as any other female-born model!
And as Editor-In-Chief Emmanuelle Alt was saying,
“She is the absolute equal of Gisele, Daria, Edie or Anna. Apart from one small detail: Valentina, the femme fatale, was born a boy. [She] embodies an age-old, arduous struggle to be recognized and not to be perceived as something Other, a gender exile . . . But only when a transgender person poses on the front cover of a fashion magazine and it is no longer necessary to write an editorial on the subject will we know the battle is won.”
The day it’s not a huge deal, is the day we’ve won. But for now, I’m happy to see a step in the right direction and hopefully we take many more towards equality. ♥
